Here are some reasons why we celebrate this event.....
Walk to School activities occur throughout the United States and internationally during the month of October (“Walktober”) with many celebrations taking place on the first Wednesday in October – Walk to School Day.
Hundreds of schools and communities in California take part in Walk to School Day each year which helps encourage daily physical activity and teaches children and families pedestrian and bicycle safety skills so they can be safer on their walk or bicycle ride to school.
Walking or bicycling to school is an ideal way to help our children meet the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity and potentially decrease their risk of obesity, diabetes, and other chronic disease.
Organized events such as Walk to School Day activities can introduce children and adults to the easy and enjoyable activities of walking or bicycling that can be incorporated into daily living. Walk to School activities also build trust and social cohesion in neighborhoods, which helps create healthier communities.
